My Story

As a young man I was torn between a desire to create stories and a desire to help animals. Ultimately, as I progressed through school I decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. In 1987 I received my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Over the following twenty years I worked along side my wife (who I'd met in vet school) to build our veterinary practice.

But the longing to be a writer was working its way free from deep within me until I could no longer ignore it. Initially, I wrote an unpublished novel that served to cement my love of writing. Subsequent to my failed novel, I tried my hand at short story writing and had found where my literary heart lay. I have written over 100 short stories, many of them published in print or online literary magazines, journals, and anthologies.

In 2012 Press 53 published my first collection of stories, "In a World of Small Truths," and in May of 2019 my second collection of short stories, "I Hear the Human Noise," was released.

“The twin subjects of love and death run through Ray Morrison’s book like a freight train rumbling slowly late at night across a countryside overcome with sadness and loss. I Hear the Human Noise is a masterful collection of short stories, and Morrison is proof that, even in these narcissistic, technologically driven times we’re living in, there are still people out there who care deeply about what it means to just be human.”

—Donald Ray Pollock, author of The Devil All the Time and The Heavenly Table
